Using personal professional experiences in therapeutic use of self means the therapist intentionally draws on their own professional background and interpersonal style as a resource to connect with the client, tailor interactions, and guide the therapeutic process. These experiences become a deliberate part of how therapy unfolds, helping to build rapport, convey understanding, and adapt approaches to fit the client’s needs and goals. They are not irrelevant, hidden, or something that should override the client’s preferences; rather, they are used ethically and transparently to support, not control, the client's own goals and autonomy.
